LABOUR DOUBLES COUNCIL HOUSE-BUILDING CASH

LABOUR DOUBLES COUNCIL HOUSE-BUILDING CASH

Over £2,000,000 to come to Bristol to build 30 new Council homes.

With the largest council house building programme for nearly two decades
already underway, Labour Housing Minister John Healey today (January 11th)
doubled Government cash for new council homes, with big investment in
Bristol.

Under the scheme, Bristol City Council will be required to offer
apprenticeship and local job recruitment schemes for people in the area,
creating much needed new jobs and apprenticeships.

Sam Townend, Labour’s candidate for Bristol North West where the new
Council houses will be built, said:

“This shows how serious the Government is about
improving the lives of people in Bristol. Nothing can be more fundamental
than a decent job and a decent home to live in.

It is a step towards satisfying the Council housing waiting list which is now well over 4,000.  It is a shame that the Council itself is not doing more to promote the construction of social housing in Bristol.

Launching the extra funding, Housing Minister John Healey said:

“This year’s spending for affordable housing by the Labour Government will
be the largest ever. We know that more affordable homes for rent are needed
in Bristol, and are using the power of public investment to help economic
growth by building the homes people need.

“This announcement shows yet again that only a Labour Government is
committed to investing its way through the recession, creating new jobs
while improving communities across the South West. A Tory Government would
threaten this investment, and the thousands of jobs it will create.”
